Bilton with Harrogate - Forest, Farms and Families
Published in 2008, this was the official report at the end of our third Lottery funded research project.
This third project concentrated more on the social history of our Study area. We looked at the way of life of the people as the area changed from an open landscape as part of the Forest of Knaresborough firstly to a rural farming community and then to a largely urban area.
We studied the history of Bilton Park which for several centuries constituted a large part of the study area. We catalogued the 20-plus farms in the area, in some cases with the help of the occupiers of still existing farms. We then researched the growth of the urban area and the development of its infra-structure.
