Bilton with Harrogate - A History Timeline

This booklet is a history of Bilton presented as a timeline from the Vikings to the present day produced by the study group to celebrate our Silver Jubilee. We were founded in 1996 with the objectives of recording, investigating and promoting an awarewness of Bilton’s heritage and future, also to unravel the secrets of Bilton’s past, its people, buildings, railways, industry, royal hunting park and a lost way of life.

The result of the society’s three Community Archaeology Projets, helped with support from the Local Heritage Initiative and the Heritage Lottery Fund, resulted in the booklets:

Bilton with Harrogate - our Historic Countryside

Bilton with Harrogate - our Historic Industry

Bilton with Harrogate - Forest, Farms and Families

As a result of these activities it has been possible to produce this timeline summary.

It is not possible in this small book to record in detail all that has been uncovered so far about Bilton’s past, but it gives a selection of the entries in a spread sheet started by the society to cover as much of Bilton’s history as possible. The time line takes us from the Vikings to the present day, over 1100 years from Jorvik to Covid, and provides an overview of what has been found so far.

The timeline is an ongoing project and if there is an event you would like to add to the spreadsheet we would be delghted to hear from you at mail@biltonhistoricalsociety.org.uk
